Velma Burke Baugher, a woman of grace, faith, and industry, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Cedar Creek Nursing Home in Marion, IN. She was born on December 16, 1937, in Prestonsburg, KY to Raymond and Leona (Harmon) Burke. At the age of nine, Velma moved with her family to Indiana, where she later graduated from Gilead High School with the Class of 1956.
In June of 1961, Velma married the love of her life, Jack Baugher. Together they shared more than 50 years of devoted marriage until his passing in September of 2014.
A true “classy lady,” Velma transformed her love for beauty into a lifelong career. After graduating from Fort Wayne Beauty School in 1957, she spent eight years perfecting her skills before opening her own salon, House of Beauty. Velma proudly served her community as a licensed hairdresser for an extraordinary 50 years, building lasting friendships with generations of clients.
Her dedication to others extended well beyond her profession. Velma was a faithful member of First Christian Church for 45 years, where she served as a greeter and communion worker. She also volunteered with Mobile Meals and generously donated more than 15 gallons of blood throughout her lifetime.
Velma found joy in life’s simplest blessings. She was an avid gardener, known for her abundant vegetable gardens and her talent for canning. She especially loved bird watching and took great delight in the hummingbirds that frequented her yard.
A gifted baker, Velma’s home was always filled with warmth and the comforting aroma of homemade treats. Above all, she cherished animals deeply—her dogs were truly her children, and she cared for them with boundless love and devotion.
Velma is survived by her sister, Brenda Hoffman; her great-niece, Michele Leming; her great-nieces and nephews, Megan Crews, Kelsey Crews, and Olivia Murgaw; along with several extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Baugher; her parents, Raymond and Leona Burke; her brother; and other cherished family members.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Titus Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2000 Sheridan Street, Warsaw, Indiana 46580. Burial will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Oakwood Cemetery, with services officiated by Pastor Gary Boschain.
Donations may be given to the Kosciusko Animal Welfare League.
