Philip "Phil" Dale Esenwein, a hardworking man who spent nearly 30 years as a lineman for NIPSCO, passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2023, at his home on Sawmill Lake in Leesburg. He was born on May 7, 1949, in Elkhart to Walter and Betty (McCorkle) Esenwein.
Phil spent much of his early life in Elkhart County and graduated from Wakarusa High School. He remained a proud patriot throughout his life and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 253. In the Army, Phil served nearly two years in Germany, stationed mainly in Berlin. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1971.
A private person with good but often dry sense of humor, Phil had many hobbies and interests. He loved working on cars and was a fan of Corvettes. He also had a passion for boating and fishing. Phil's love for dogs was exceptional.
Phil is survived by two children, Amber and Jon; when they were younger, he enjoyed taking them camping and sailing regularly., In addition to his two children, daughter, Amber Crawford-Esenwein and her wife, Jill Crawford-Esenwein of Miami Beach, FL and son, Jon Esenwein and his wife, Carol Esenwein of Pierceton he is survived by two grandsons, Jon and Lucas Esenwein of Pierceton and one great-grandson. Phil was preceded in passing by his daughter, Erika Esenwein, sister, Sherry Paugh. and his parents.
Phil will always be remembered for the tireless dedication to his work and as a proud Army veteran who served the country. A graveside service will be held on August 25, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. in Mock Cemetery, 4782 N 850 E, North Webster. Military honors will be coordinated through American Legion Post 253; funeral director, Cory Benz will lead the serivce.
