Michael G. Lattimer, of Leesburg (Lake Tippecanoe) and formerly of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield, Indiana at the age of 84. He was born on February 18, 1939, in Connersville, the son of Albert and Dixie Lattimer (Frazier).
After graduating from Plymouth High School in 1957, Mike furthered his education at Ball State University. In 1961, he proudly earned his bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree from there. Armed with his determination to make a positive impact on young lives, Mike embarked on a remarkable career as a teacher and guidance counselor for Elkhart Community Schools that spanned over four decades.
Aside from his counseling duties, Michael served as a football and track coach for Elkhart Memorial. Through his leadership and mentorship, he imparted valuable life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance to generations of athletes. Perhaps one of his proudest accomplishments was helping many deserving students secure college scholarships through the Dollars for Scholars program.
Mike loved nature. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Michael was an active member of the Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners Organization and The Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation. Both organizations work to protect waterway ecology in Indiana.
He was happiest sitting on the shores of Lake Tippecanoe. The 4th of July weekend always brought him joy. There was nothing better than watching his kids and grandkids play in the sand, take boat rides, and learn how to water ski. And then there was the food! Fresh popped popcorn, homemade ice cream, little neck clams, and lemonade were some of his absolute favorites!
Michael’s greatest joy in life came from his family. He was a loving husband to Suzanne, who he married on June 4, 1960, and a devoted father to his children, Lisa (Leon) Ford, Megan (Scott) Cain, and Brian (Michele) Lattimer. Michael adored his seven grandchildren (Allesha, Luke, Andrew, Brennon, Aimee, Ben, and Zach) and nine great-grandchildren. He cherished every moment spent with them. In addition to his immediate family, Michael is survived by his sister, Becky Hindman and his brothers, Dave (Wanda) Lattimer and John (Gwen) Lattimer as well as many extended family members and friends.
