Syracuse – Joyce Marie Selvey, 88, died June 25, 2025, around 2:00am at her home. She was born on June 27, 1936, in Winamac, IN, to Donald “Pete” Straw and Grace Thelma Kistler.
Joyce married Wilbur Martin Smith in Winamac, who passed away May 12, 2012. She married William “Bill” Selvey in Syracuse on March 6, 1983.
She was a graduate of Winamac High School and Gale Institute of Minneapolis. She was a member of the Winamac Sunshine Girls and one of the first four women to join the Syracuse Wawasee Lion’s Club. Joyce lived most of her life in Crown Point and Syracuse. She was a legal secretary at the Bendix-Missile Division in Mishawaka. She was also a freelance reporter and photographer for The Times Union, Goshen News, Elkhart Truth, South Bend Tribune, Fort Wayne News Sentinel, and The Indianapolis Star. Joyce was the owner of the Country Mouse, in Syracuse, a retailer for children’s, ladies’, and men’s clothing for 35 years.
Joyce was an avid Cubs fan, loved reading books, gardening in her flowerbed, bird watching, especially orioles, which were her favorite, knitting, and working on puzzles.
Joyce is survived by her son, Terry Lee Smith and his companion Kim Marcadis; her sister, Carol Minarik; grandchildren, Sydney (Smith) Cecil and her husband, Chad Cecil and Sarah Smith; and great grandchildren, Calvin, Thea, Adler, and Forrest. She was preceded in death by her son, Brad Alan Smith who passed away May 17, 2006; her husbands, Wilbur Smith and Bill Selvey; her sister, Sandra “Tudie” Homer; and her parents.
