Joseph "James" Mendenhall, age 80, of Summerville, South Carolina and formerly of Warsaw, passed away on August 4, 2026. He was born on September 26, 1945 to Joseph B. and Sherry (Whelan) Mendenhall. He married Suzanne (Long) Mendenhall on April 10th, 1971. He lived a life marked by steady work, and enjoyment of the outdoors.
Joseph attended Warsaw High School, and graduated from Brethren High School in 1964 in Paramount, California. He also attended Grace College. He went on to work for United Telephone, building a career that reflected commitment and dependability. Outside of work, Joseph found happiness in activities such as being a certified boat captain, dive instructor, shotgun and skeet shooting. He was a member of the Kosko Gun Club. He was described as a kid at heart, and that quality remained an enduring part of how he will be remembered.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Susan Mendenhall of Summerville, South Carolina. He is also survived by his in-laws: Carolyn Long, Darlene (Chris) Hill, Becky (Steve) Jefferies, Dee Long and Roz (Gil) Hodge. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whose place in his life formed an important part of his family circle. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Douglas Long.
Arrangements are entrusted to Titus Funeral Home, 8056 East 500 North, North Webster, IN 46555. A graveside service will be held on September 4, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery,421 North Maple Avenue, Warsaw, Indiana 46580. A luncheon at the Boathouse will follow to those who knew him to continue sharing stories and memories.
