Helen Ummel, of Leesburg, passed away at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the age of 75. She was born on May 16, 1950 in Goshen, IN to Peter and Mary Popowzak.
Helen graduated from Nappanee High School in 1968. She earned her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Purdue University and became a registered nurse. She dedicated her professional life to nursing, working at Kosciusko Community Hospital for many years before her retirement. Her caring nature and commitment to others were evident in both her career and her personal life. She held a very strong deep Catholic faith that guided her through life and brought comfort to her family and friends.
Throughout her life, Helen made countless memories with her loved ones. She was famously known for her delicious cherry pie and had a passion for baking that brought joy to those around her. More than just a magical baker, she reveled in sharing moments of fun and creativity with her family, particularly through crafts with her grandchildren. Her love for her family was profound, and she was known to be wonderful to be around, bringing laughter and warmth into every gathering.
Helen is survived by her devoted husband, Dallas Ummel, and her loving family: Rodney Lutes, Angela Hite, Andrew Ummel, Jonathan (Jennifer) Ummel, Karen (Dennis) Heuwagen, Steven (Jean) Ummel, Lisa Ummel, Sharon (Allen) Halquist, and Katherine (Mike) Mattner, 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her siblings, Maria (Bob) Berger, Gene Popowzak, Caroline (Keith) Chrisman, and 11 nieces and nephews. All will carry forward her legacy of love and a nurturing spirit. Helen is preceded in death by her parents.
Her Life Celebration® visitation for Helen will be held on November 6, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at 125 N Harrison St, Warsaw, IN 46580. A Rosary will take place at 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM. Father Jonathan Norton will celebrate the mass with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw. Arrangements are entrusted to Titus Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2000 Sheridan Street, Warsaw, IN 46580.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, Angels of Hope or to Right to Life with envelopes available at the church.
