George Riley Prater, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 15, 2024 at the Stillwater Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. George was born on November 20 1944, in Woodland, Illinois to Robert P. and Elsie Prater.
For more than 36 years, George devoted himself to R.R. Donnelley, embodying the values he learned at a young age. Even after retirement, his strong work ethic shone through as he took on the role of a bagger at Marsh & Owens Grocery Stores. His commitment to his work was only matched by his unwavering patriotism; he honorably served in the United States Air Force and remained an active member of the American Legion.
George's personality was a blend of orneriness and warmth, with a good sense of humor that endeared him to many. He was well-known for his hearty laugh and his ability to joke and kid around, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. He had a passion for motorcycle riding and was a devoted history buff.
Above all, George found immense joy in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary K. Prater; his step-sons, Mat (Tamara) Johnson and Craig (Malea) Johnson; his grandchildren, Kayla, Isabel, and Zayne; his bonus daughter, Elyse Hardin, along with her faithful companion, Sarge the dog, and his sister, Joy Zelhart. The laughter and love that filled their time together will remain a lasting legacy.
