Flora "Alice" Hughes, age 83, of Syracuse, passed away on August 5, 2026, in Elkhart, Indiana. She was born on March 26, 1943, in Stone Gap, Virginia to James and Belvia (Hays) Sturgill. She married Robert Hughes in August of 1978. He passed away on September 9, 1997.

Alice, as she was lovingly known, grew up in Stone Gap, shaping her character with the values of warmth, generosity, and steadfast faith that she carried throughout her life. Her journey took her from the hills of Virginia to the community of Syracuse & North Webster, where she touched countless lives with her gentle strength and compassion.

A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Alice is survived by her beloved children: sons Michael (Donna) Sturgeon of Morgantown, Jeff (JoAnne) Sturgeon of Bloomington, and her daughter Neva Jo Hughes Griffith of Portage. She is also survived by her brother Jr. Ray Sturgill of Cromwell, and her sister Nellie Fryman of Indianapolis. Alice was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Paul, Cricket, Arthur, Hubert, Mac, and Wolfred Sturgill; her sisters Marie Wright and Jenny; and her nephew Christopher Sturgill. Their memories remained close to her heart, and she often spoke fondly of the love and laughter they brought into her life.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Alice was a cherished member of Open Bible Baptist Church, finding peace, purpose, and a second family among the congregation. Her devotion to her spiritual community provided comfort and support. Music, especially country, brought her joy, helping to fill her days with melody and meaning.

Alice delighted in traveling and camping, exploring new places, always eager for an adventure, whether near or far. Visiting family in Virginia meant a lot to her.
