Esther Louise Dunning, formerly of Milford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Waterford Crossing in Goshen at the age of 91. She was born on June 18, 1933, in Atchison, Kansas, to Frank and Grace Shumaker (Fleiner). Esther was known for her kind and gentle spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew her.
Esther graduated from Atchison High School and pursued further education at Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison. On August 1, 1954, she was united in marriage to Richard “P.D.” Dunning. The two shared a wonderful 62 years together before his passing in February of 2017.
Esther worked for several newspapers as a proofreader ultimately retiring from The Paper in Milford, where her attention to detail was evident and her contributions valued. She also worked as an administrative assistant at Heritage Middle School in Middlebury.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Esther enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She loved cooking, reading, and engaging in crafts. Her passion for gardening brought beauty to her surroundings, while her spirit of service shined through her volunteer work at the local library and at the Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend.
Esther is survived by her son, Richard (DeAne Lagerquist) Dunning II; her daughter, Robin (Rick) DuBois; and her grandson, Thomas Bjorn Lagerquist Dunning. She is also remembered by her sisters-in-law, Sarah Dunning and Mary Zabrosky. She joins in eternal rest her parents, Frank and Grace; her sister, Velma Christman; and her brothers, Frank and Robert Shumaker.
Titus Funeral Home of Syracuse is entrusted with Esther’s care. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, 1001 S. Huntington St. Syracuse, IN, on Sunday, December 22, 2024, from 3:00pm until 5:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Redeeming Grace Church, 203 E Main St, Syracuse, IN at 5:00 pm with doors opening one hour prior.
