Ernesto "Ernie" N. Saldivar, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in his home in Pierceton on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on August 8, 1944, in San Benito, Texas, he was the son of Rodolfo and Piedad Saldivar. Ernie lived a life characterized by dedication and commitment to his loved ones.
As a jack of all trades, Ernie's career path was as varied as it was colorful. He excelled as a car salesman, owning his own business (JEM Motor Car Company), and dedicated years to serving the state unemployment office and the police department. However, his entrepreneurial spirit truly shone through when he owned the Candy Cane Restaurant in Warsaw. His ability to connect with others was a hallmark of his personality; he never met a stranger and was known for his fun-loving ways.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Ernie proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1967. His military service was a significant source of pride for him.
Family was the cornerstone of Ernie’s life. He married Cheryl Kinley on August 16, 1986, in Michigan, and together they nurtured a household filled with love and unwavering support until her passing in July 2011.
Ernie found joy in playing guitar and singing, as well as in painting and woodworking. He loved the great outdoors, often spending time camping, fishing and golfing. His love for animals was evident in the special bond he shared with his cats and his dog, Snickerbar. Known for his charm and salesmanship, he had a unique ability to sell anything to anyone, a skill that not only defined his career but endeared him to many people.
He is survived by his children: Ernie (Sandra) Saldivar Jr., Michael (Margaret) Saldivar, Andrea (Sky) Strouth, and AJ (Tiffany) Saldivar. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Chris (Mandi), Hayden, Caroline (Jacob), Kelli, and Jace, as well as his great-grandchildren, Ellie and Sage. Ernie also leaves behind his siblings: Ofelia “Mickie”, Ernestina “Tina”, San Juanita “Janie”, and Ronald “Ronnie”. He was preceded in passing by his parents, wife, and siblings Rudy, Arthur and Mary Alice.
