Listen to Obituary

Doris Mae Armbruster, age 101, of Syracuse, went into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 17, 2026, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 5, 1925 to Orlando "O.P." Davis and Leona (Stansbury) Insley. She married Elmer Carl Armbruster on February 22, 1948 in Syracuse, Indiana. He passed away on September 4, 2010.

A proud graduate of Syracuse High School in 1943, Doris was a lifelong resident of Syracuse, Indiana, where she found joy and purpose in many pursuits. She was an active and faithful attendee of Wawasee Heights Baptist Church and prior churches where she dedicated herself to serving in the nurseries, nurturing the youngest members of her church family with love and care. Doris’s commitment to her faith extended beyond Sunday services; she was a regular participant in Bible studies held both at homes and within the church.

Doris’s interests painted a vivid picture of her gentle and nurturing spirit. She delighted in baking cookies, a craft through which she expressed her love to family and friends. Her appreciation of nature was profound, particularly her fascination with hummingbirds and all birds, and her care for flowers both indoors and out. She took great pleasure in embroidering, the meticulous art reflecting her patient and detailed nature, and enjoyed the simple labor of mowing her lawn. Dogs were also close to her heart, adding to the warmth and companionship that defined her life.

Her family was a central pillar of her existence. Doris is survived by her children Sue (David) Grenert of Lakeville and Daniel (Deborah) Armbruster of Syracuse, who carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. She is also embraced by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring family roots she nurtured throughout her life. Fran Armbruster of Warsaw, her daughter-in-law, also remains a close family member, holding Doris dear in memory and heart.

Doris’s family history includes those who have gone before her: her parents Orlando “O.P.” Davis and Leona (Stransbury) Insley, her son David Armbruster, her sister Mary Wolter, her half-sister Patricia Gow, and her great-grandson Calvin Armbruster. Their memory lives on in the stories and hearts of those she loved.

Her life was marked not only by the roles she filled but by the quiet strength and kindness she exhibited daily. Doris’s influence reached far beyond her immediate family and church community; her nurturing spirit and gentle nature left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
