David F. Byers

David F. Byers, age 70, of North Webster, Indiana, passed away on June 22, 2026. He was born on August 1, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, to Rev. Clyde and Betty (Macdonald) Byers.

David spent his childhood in northern Indiana, experiencing life in communities including Burket, Kendallville, and Galveston as his father served in the United Methodist Church. Summers were often spent at Camp Adventure alongside his sister, Carol, where they rode bikes, swam, and stayed outdoors until the streetlights came on.

When his family moved to Galveston before his freshman year of high school, David remained in Walton thanks to the friendship of Tony Plank and the generosity of Don and Joanne Plank, who welcomed him into their home. He proudly graduated from Lewis Cass High School, where he played football and excelled as a swimmer. His years in Walton and the time spent on the Plank family farm remained some of his fondest memories, and he often spoke of them throughout his life.

David's life took him to many places, including Texas and Grand Rapids, Michigan, but he always cherished the relationships he built along the way. During his middle years, he spent much of his time near his sister Carol and her family, forming close and lasting bonds with his niece, Jamie, and nephew, Kyle, whom he loved watching grow into adulthood and begin families of their own.

In his later years, David made his home in North Webster, where he enjoyed the beauty of the lakes and found peace at Epworth Forest, a place that held special meaning for his family through the years.

David enjoyed the music of his youth, cheering for the Detroit Tigers, following high school and college sports, and taking pride in all that grows in Indiana, whether athletes, livestock, or the state's iconic cornfields. He expressed his love through simple acts of hospitality, especially grilling steaks for family and friends, and he was known for bringing his warm sense of humor wherever he went.

David is survived by his sister, Carol (Rev. Leon) Pomeroy of Knox; his son, Alex Byers; his niece, Jamie (Kiefer) Kerlin of Arkansas; his nephew, Kyle (Bethany) Stead of Charlotte, North Carolina; and his great-nephew, Andrew Stead of Charlotte, North Carolina. He was especially looking forward to welcoming Jamie's son, Joseph Kerlin, into the family. David was preceded in death by his parents.

Those who knew David will remember a man who valued family, friendships, and the simple joys of life. His memories live on in the stories shared around dinner tables, at family gatherings, and among lifelong friends. As those who loved him reflect on his life, they celebrate the lasting impact he made through his kindness, humor, and steadfast presence.
