Creighton E Burns

Creighton E. Burns, age 83, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026 with his children by his side.

Born on September 20, 1942, Creighton grew up in Cromwell, Indiana, where he graduated from Cromwell High School as part of a class of just 12 students. A gifted and driven athlete, he earned 15 varsity letters in basketball, baseball, cross country, and track and field—foreshadowing a lifelong passion for sports and competition.

Creighton continued his athletic career at Purdue University, where he played both baseball and basketball and remained one of the university’s most loyal fans throughout his life. Although he loved the game of basketball, his exceptional talent shined brightest on the baseball diamond.

At just 17 years old, Creighton was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but at his father’s urging, he chose to attend college. After graduating from Purdue, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins organization. On his first day of spring training, Harmon Killebrew offered him a pair of cleats because his were well worn and loved and too shabby for Killebrew's liking. During his professional career, he played alongside not only Killebrew, but Rod Carew and Charlie Manuel, and competed against legends of the game including Pete Rose. He took great pride in striking out Hall of Famer Johnny Bench on more than one occasion. His promising baseball career was cut short by an elbow injury (too early for Tommy John surgery), but it led him to a lifelong calling - coaching and teaching.

Creighton transitioned into education and coaching, where he made an extraordinary impact. He taught physical education, health and wellness, and driver’s education, and he genuinely loved his students. He coached at both the high school and collegiate levels, earning more than 400 wins in his coaching career along with numerous coaching honors. A dedicated mentor, he instilled in his students and athletes the values of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. To generations of students, he was more than a teacher or coach—he was a steady presence, a motivator, and a role model. He leaves behind a deep rooted coaching tree.

An Eagle Scout, Creighton carried the principles of leadership, integrity, and service throughout his life. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, reflecting his commitment to fellowship, tradition, and community. He was known for his distinct whistle—instantly recognizable and forever tied to the gyms, fields, and classrooms where he spent so much of his time and the call for his kids to get home during their childhood.

To those who knew him best, Creighton will be remembered for the simple joys that defined him—including his favorite sound in the world: the perfect swish of a basketball through the net, watching/studying/writing about basketball, and cheering on his beloved Cubbies.

Above all, Creighton was a devoted father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his son, Chris (Gene), and his daughter, Betsi (Darian); and by his beloved grandchildren, Ainsley, Cully, Harrison, Nate, and Zoe, who brought him immense pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Myril Burns; his brother, Jon; his sisters, Billee, Jean, and Bobbe (who passed away on May 15, 2026); and his infant daughter, Courtney Ellen, whom he deeply loved and missed.

Whether you called him Coach, CB, Creighton, Butch, Mr. Burns, or Dad, Creighton will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former players and students, and colleagues. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he shaped, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
