Listen to Obituary

Betty Zimmerman, age 94, of Milford, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Waterford Crossing in Goshen. She was born on March 4th, 1932 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Reevie (Sam) and Evelyn (Peg) Coleman. Betty moved to Goshen in 1939, where her parents bought The Red Top Sandwich Shop. Betty Attended Goshen High School and received her GED later in life.

On July 18th, 1948 she married Devon Newcomer, of Nappanee. Together they had two sons, Dennis Lee Newcomer and Gary Wayne Newcomer. Devon preceded her in death in 1957. On August 23rd, 1958, she married Elmer Zimmerman of Milford. Together they owned and operated The Zimmerman Gravel Pit until Elmer’s passing in 1979.

Betty was a long time resident of the town of Milford. Early in life, Betty was employed with the Nappanee Telephone Company and became the owner of Zimmerman Gravel. Betty was a Lifetime Member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Milford and was a lifetime volunteer of Goshen General Hospital. In Betty’s earlier days, she loved to have pool parties and have family and friends over to her lake house on Waubee. Betty loved to entertain others and never met a stranger. Most everyone in Milford knew her and enjoyed her company. Betty loved to play cards and Bingo with her friends and enjoyed going out to dinner and visiting local casinos. She loved to celebrate the 4th of July and Memorial Day with her family. She never missed a Memorial Day Parade in Milford, and you could always catch her sitting in her favorite spot in front of the post office watching her two boys march. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She welcomed them any time and always had a cold drink or snack waiting. Betty loved her two sons very much and lived next door to both of them.

Betty is survived by her son, Gary (Ginger) Newcomer of Milford, her sister Grace Hershberger of White Pigeon, Michigan and her brother Robert (Diana) Coleman of Goshen. Betty is also survived by her 6 grandchildren, Kim Strawbridge of Syracuse, Shadow Gallmeier of Fort Wayne, Kyle Newcomer of Syracuse, Shalesta (Newcomer) Peterson of Churubusco, Todd (Missy) Crowder of Fishers and Rodney (Trina) Crowder of Bristol.
