Betty Gaton Tiu Meyers, age 61, of Warsaw, died surrounded by the prayers of her loving family the evening of November 19, 2024. She had received the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, entrusting her soul to the infinite Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ.
Betty was born to Vicente Enting and Soledad Gaton Tiu on October 31, 1963 in their home in Manila, Philippines, the youngest of four children. She attended Our Lady of Grace Academy and Cecilio Apostol Elementary School in Caloocan City and delighted in accompanying her father on business trips across the island. With her brother Edward, Betty architecturally designed a new family home. At La Consolacion College in Manila, she was active in the Mother Rita Club. Betty was honored to care for her father throughout his final illness. After his death, she worked as a professorial assistant and finished her studies, majoring in Economics, for a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. She graduated dearly grateful for her Augustinian education in October of 1985.
Within the next year, Beth, as she was nicknamed, received many correspondences from pen pals across the world. A simple introductory letter and picture from Al Meyers of Columbus, Ohio captivated her; she told her mother immediately he was the man she would marry. In November of 1987, he visited the Philippines to meet her. Alan Donald and Betty Tiu Meyers were civilly married in Manila on November 14, 1988. She was granted immigration to the United States to be with him in October of 1989 and became a citizen.
In Michigan, Beth studied dental assistance and then assisted dentist and patients chairside for a few years. Al then launched his own moving business with her assistance, through which they visited all forty-eight contiguous states and Canada moving family furniture with his semi-truck. Desiring to grow their family, Al and Beth found a home outside of Warsaw, Indiana. She was an assistant in Kosciusko County Courthouse. In April of 1998, Alan entered the Catholic Church, and they were married at Sacred Heart. The next year, they welcomed their first child, Karissa Ann Meyers.
Betty provided child care as a business in her home for several years. She then also began work as a cake decorator at the Warsaw Walmart. In 2004, the family welcomed the birth of Michael Anthony Meyers, who died the same day. By the end of the next year was born their third child, Caleb Vincent Meyers. Beth noticed her son’s cancerous tumor from an early stage and supported him wholly through remission, as she always gave her family the utmost care, attention, and love. She was constantly teaching her children many subjects, reading with them, and fueling their growth. At home, Beth enjoyed cooking Asian, American, and European cuisine; gardening vegetables and roses; keeping fish; sewing dresses and blankets; scrapbooking family memories; drawing and painting; and paper-crafting for friends. From 2011 to 2019, she was a cook at Warsaw Community High School. Beth was a first-grade catechist at Sacred Heart and led a hospitality committee there with her family for eighteen years. She enjoyed volunteering at Warsaw Community Public Library with her son Caleb and traveling with her family. She prayed the Holy Rosary daily and treasured visits to the Blessed Sacrament, especially for Holy Mass and Benediction. She had the joy of witnessing her daughter Karissa’s investiture and oblation at Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey in Oklahoma.
Awaiting diagnosis of her final illness, Betty expressed gratitude for God’s many graces in her life and acceptance of Divine Providence. She was especially devoted from childhood to Santo Niño de Cebú, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Saint Joseph. Beth and her family are sincerely thankful for the excellent care given her by Dr. Ryan Gonzales and Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology, the generous assistance of so many kind friends throughout her treatment, and the pious prayers of all who entrust her soul now to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in Heaven.
