Bernard Vermillon

Bernard “Bernie” Vermillon, of Warsaw, Indiana and formerly of Glen Carbon, Illinois, passed away on December 20, 2024, at home, surrounded by his family at the age of 89. Bernie was born on September 26, 1935, in E. St. Louis, Illinois to Bernard F. Vermillon and Helen (Chaput) Vermillon. He was known for his generosity, patience, strong faith, and his willingness to always lend a hand.

Bernie graduated from Assumption High School in 1954. On September 10, 1955, he married Venita Jo Owens. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this year.

Bernie started his railroad career in 1954 with the Pennsylvania Railroad (later known as Penn Central and Conrail). He retired from Conrail in 1994 after 40 years of service. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing with his buddies (routinely walking the course), tinkering in the garage, traveling, and visiting his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He was a longtime member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where he was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus. He was former chair of the Tootsie Roll drive and a dedicated volunteer helping with the 2nd Sunday breakfasts, chicken dinners and any other needs at the church.

Bernie is survived by his devoted wife; his son, Bernard “Benny” Vermillon of Salida CO; his daughter, Peggy Myles (Michael) of Warsaw; his daughter in law, Mary Vermillon of Hendersonville, NC; his grandchildren, Matthew Myles of Scottsdale, AZ and Mackenzie Shireman (Nathan) of Warsaw; his great grandchildren, Millicent “Millie” Shireman and Natalie Shireman; and his sister, Mary Ann Conrad. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Owens Patrick Vermillon and sisters, Dorothy Burns and Helen Haywood.

Titus Funeral Home of Warsaw is entrusted with the care of Bernie. A funeral mass will be held on January 11, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 N Main St, Glen Carbon, IL 62034. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass in the church vestibule.
