Alice Marie Schilling, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher, passed away on September 19, 2026. Her life was a beautiful reflection of love, faith, family, and devotion to others. She leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, countless lives touched, and a family whose love for her will endure forever.
Born on September 8, 1933, in Dayton Ohio, to Orville and Beulah Foust. Alice was the sixth of their eight children. In 1951, she moved to North Manchester Indiana, to attend Manchester College. It was there that she met the love of her life, Rex Schilling. They were united in marriage on August 14, 1955, and shared 65 wonderful years together until Rex’s passing in 2020. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership built on faith, love, commitment, and family.
Together, Alice and Rex built a life on their farm in Claypool, where they raised their three children, dairy cows and corn. Their home was filled with laughter, games, family traditions, and memories that will be treasured for generations. Alice’s family was her greatest blessing, and she devoted her life to loving and supporting them.
Alice also found great purpose and joy in her career as an elementary school teacher. She began teaching third grade at Claypool Elementary in 1967 and continued for 27 years including 22 years teaching fifth grade at Silver Lake Elementary. She was a beloved educator who made a lasting difference in the lives of her students. Her patience, kindness, and dedication left an impression that extended far beyond the classroom.
In her free time, Alice enjoyed traveling with Rex, watching college sports, antiquing, sewing, and other crafts. She was an active member of Center United Methodist Church in Silver Lake teaching Sunday School and serving on several committees throughout her 65-year membership. She was an avid fan of the Warsaw Tigers; she and Rex were fixtures at basketball games for many years. She appreciated life’s simple pleasures and found happiness in every moment spent with family and friends.
Alice treasured her ten grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She was their most devoted supporter and fan. She faithfully attended their school and sporting events, celebrating their accomplishments along the way. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in watching them grow and build successful lives of their own.
Alice is survived by her three children, Kathee (Mike) Reed, Kim (Steve) Kesler, and Tom (Kelly) Schilling; her brother, Jim (Sonya) Foust; and her sister, Rachel Foust, ten cherished grandchildren: Lara (Brian) Barbour, Brooks (Jessica) Reed, Rob (Bethany) Kesler, Ross (Kristin) Kesler, Kara (Wes) Whisler, Kyla Kesler, Kandi (Shane) Eagan, Rhett (Zosia) Kesler, Sam Schilling, and Kate Schilling.
She is also survived by 24 great grandchildren: Charlotte, Knox, Violet, Ivy, Nolan, Serena, Paxton, and Oliver Kesler; Gwynn, Molly, Vivyan, and Guy Whisler; Nova, Belle, and Warren Snoddy; Vayda, Rex, and Maeve Eagan; Harper, Scarlett, and Iris Reed; Hallie, Sutton and Reed Barbour. Alice felt deeply blessed to be an active part of their lives, and they will forever treasure the memory of knowing their great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, three sisters, and two brothers.
Alice will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her strong faith, her dedication to teaching, and the warmth and kindness she shared with those around her. She lived a life rich in purpose, finding her greatest happiness not in things, but in the people she loved and the memories they created together.
